Famous quotes containing the words temporal, receptive and/or field:

Social questions are too sectional, too topical, too temporal to move a man to the mighty effort which is needed to produce great poetry. Prison reform may nerve Charles Reade to produce an effective and businesslike prose melodrama; but it could never produce Hamlet, Faust, or Peer Gynt.
    George Bernard Shaw (1856–1950)

We tend to be so bombarded with information, and we move so quickly, that there’s a tendency to treat everything on the surface level and process things quickly. This is antithetical to the kind of openness and perception you have to have to be receptive to poetry. ... poetry seems to exist in a parallel universe outside daily life in America.
    Rita Dove (b. 1952)

Frankly, I’d like to see the government get out of war altogether and leave the whole field to private industry.
    Joseph Heller (b. 1923)
