Southern Amateur Football League - Representative Team

Representative Team

The League representative team has played a programme of friendly fixtures since the 1920s against other AFA affiliated leagues and universities such as Oxford and Cambridge. Two matches are played each season in memory of past servants to the League. The Champion Club plays against a Rest of the League XI at the beginning of each season for the Stuart Hyde Trophy, named for the former SAL and Southgate Olympic team manager. Later in the Autumn the League face the Amateur Football Combination for the Steve Langley Cup in honour of the former SAL, AFA and Crouch End Vampires captain.

Beginning in 2007 the team has played in the FA Inter-League Cup (then known as the FA National League System Cup) which it won at the first attempt, beating the Midland Combination (Division 1) in a penalty shoot-out at the Ricoh Arena in Coventry in May 2008. This followed an 'AFA-derby' victory over the Amateur Football Combination in the semi-final. This win earned the team the right to play as 'England D' in a qualifying tournament for the UEFA Regions Cup in Italy in October 2008. Despite remaining unbeaten and not conceding a goal, the team were eliminated after finishing second in the mini-tournament to the representatives of the Republic of Ireland.

Famous quotes containing the word team:

Relying on any one disciplinary approach—time-out, negotiation, tough love, the star system—puts the parenting team at risk. Why? Because children adapt to any method very quickly; today’s effective technique becomes tomorrow’s worn dance.
    Ron Taffel (20th century)
