Churches

The Church of England parish church of Saint John the Baptist at Bethesda, with its arguably Saxon doorway, stands by ancient earthworks at the South-Western outskirts of the village, by a ford on the old pilgrim route from the Downs to Dorchester. Unfortunately after the conviction for perjury of its last independent Rector the parish became insolvent, the church was closed in 2011 and it is in increasing disrepair. The parish is now a member of the Churn Benefice, along with the neighbouring village parishes of North Moreton, Aston Tirrold, Aston Upthorpe, Blewbury, Hagbourne, and Upton.

South Moreton has a Strict Baptist Chapel.

Famous quotes containing the word churches:

Political organizations have slowly substituted themselves for the Churches as the places for believing practices.... Politics has once again become religious.
    Michel de Certeau (1925–1986)

A few years ago, the liberal churches complained that the Calvinistic church denied to them the name of Christian. I think the complaint was confession; a religious church would not complain.
    Ralph Waldo Emerson (1803–1882)

Good churches are not built by bad men; at least, there must be probity and enthusiasm somewhere in the society. These minsters were neither built nor filled by atheists.
    Ralph Waldo Emerson (1803–1882)
