South African Military Ranks

The South African National Defence Force's rank system is largely based on the British system, with the Air Force (and later the Medical Health Service) sharing the Army rank titles. Rank titles changed over time as did the insignia.

In 2008 the South African Air Force redesigned its insignia completely, while keeping the Army titles.

Famous quotes containing the words south, african, military and/or ranks:

The cloud was so dark that it needed all the bright lights that could be turned upon it. But for four years there was a contagion of nobility in the land, and the best blood North and South poured itself out a libation to propitiate the deities of Truth and Justice. The great sin of slavery was washed out, but at what a cost!
    M. E. W. Sherwood (1826–1903)

I’ve never been afraid to step out and to reach out and to move out in order to make things happen.
Victoria Gray, African American civil rights activist. As quoted in This Little Light of Mine, ch. 3, by Hay Mills (1993)

War both needs and generates certain virtues; not the highest, but what may be called the preliminary virtues, as valour, veracity, the spirit of obedience, the habit of discipline. Any of these, and of others like them, when possessed by a nation, and no matter how generated, will give them a military advantage, and make them more likely to stay in the race of nations.
    Walter Bagehot (1826–1877)

Every woman who vacates a place in the teachers’ ranks and enters an unusual line of work, does two excellent things: she makes room for someone waiting for a place and helps to open a new vocation for herself and other women.
    Frances E. Willard (1839–1898)
