South African Cricket Team in Sri Lanka in 2006 - Withdrawal From Unitech Cup

Withdrawal From Unitech Cup

Originally, South Africa was set to play Sri Lanka and India in the tri-nation Unitech Cup one-day cricket tournament. Following a series of bomb blasts in the Sri Lankan capital, relating to the renewal of ethnic conflict plaguing that country, Cricket South Africa employed an independent security consultant to determine the risk posed to players. The risk to the team was determined to be "unacceptable" and South Africa's involvement in the tour came to a premature end. Following South Africa's withdrawal, Sri Lanka and India were scheduled to play a One-day International series, but this was rained off.

Famous quotes containing the words withdrawal and/or cup:

A separation situation is different for adults than it is for children. When we were very young children, a physical separation was interpreted as a violation of our inalienable rights....As we grew older, the withdrawal of love, whether that meant being misunderstood, mislabeled or slighted, became the separation situation we responded to.
    Roger Gould (20th century)

    In poorer lands
No one touches the water of life.
    It has no taste
    And though it refreshes absolutely
It is a cup that must also pass
    Until everybody
    Gets some advantage....
    John Ashbery (b. 1927)
