Sonora Matancera - Leaving Cuba

Leaving Cuba

Having signed a lucrative contract to perform in Mexico City, the band, accompanied by Celia Cruz, left Havana on June 15, 1960. Minino decided to stay. In 1961, Mario "Papaíto" Muñoz joined the ensemble as the new timbalero/bongosero/campanero. The conjunto never returned to Cuba. Presumably, this was due to their opposition to the recent Cuban Revolution. In 1962, Conjunto Sonora Matancera established itself in New York City, where it continued to perform Cuban/Afro-Cuban urban dance music.

Famous quotes containing the words leaving and/or cuba:

Here lies interred in the eternity of the past, from whence there is no resurrection for the days—whatever there may be for the dust—the thirty-third year of an ill-spent life, which, after a lingering disease of many months sank into a lethargy, and expired, January 22d, 1821, A.D. leaving a successor inconsolable for the very loss which occasioned its existence.
    George Gordon Noel Byron (1788–1824)

Education is a necessity, it helps to understand life. Like that compagnero in Cuba who talked about politics, back when they were on strike. He knew many things, that hijo de puta, and he unraveled the most confusing situations in a marvelous way. You could see each point in front of you on the line of his reasoning like rinsed laundry set up to dry; he explained things to you so clearly that you could grasp it like a good hunk of bread with your hand.
    Jacques Roumain (1907–1945)
