Sonoma-Marin Area Rail Transit

The Sonoma-Marin Area Rail Transit (SMART) project is a future passenger rail service in Northern California, United States, to serve the Sonoma-Marin Area Rail Transit District, which consists of Sonoma and Marin counties. The district was established by state law in 2003. At full build-out, SMART will serve a 70 mile stretch of track from Cloverdale to Larkspur Landing.

The project is largely funded by a 0.25% sales tax, Measure Q, passed by voters in the two counties in 2008. It was initially planned to be fully completed by 2014, but the economic downturn, increased costs, and the difficulty of obtaining permits has resulted in a plan to open a 38 mile initial operating segment between Santa Rosa and downtown San Rafael by 2016, with additional segments to be opened as funding becomes available.

Famous quotes containing the words area, rail and/or transit:

Whatever an artist’s personal feelings are, as soon as an artist fills a certain area on the canvas or circumscribes it, he becomes historical. He acts from or upon other artists.
    Willem De Kooning (b. 1904)

If goodness were only a theory, it were a pity it should be lost to the world. There are a number of things, the idea of which is a clear gain to the mind. Let people, for instance, rail at friendship, genius, freedom, as long as they will—the very names of these despised qualities are better than anything else that could be substituted for them, and embalm even the most envenomed satire against them.
    William Hazlitt (1778–1830)

There’s that popular misconception of man as something between a brute and an angel. Actually man is in transit between brute and God.
    Norman Mailer (b. 1923)
