So Fine (Electric Light Orchestra Song)

"So Fine" is the title of the fifth track from A New World Record by Electric Light Orchestra.

Recorded in 1976 at Musicland, Munich, this track is peppy and upbeat, contrasting with "Mission (A World Record)", the previous track. It is a typical example of ELO's (at the time) cutting edge use of technology and recording techniques, which would become the conventional sound of pop music within 10 years.

The middle section contains African drums and electronic percussion created by a then state of the art Moog processor, and continues with rising intensity. More and more instruments join in, until the vocal again takes over. As it fades out, it segues into the middle-eastern inspired violin of "Livin' Thing".

The song is unusual for a pop song because it has 11 chords (E C G D A F#m G#m Bm B C#m Am); most pop songs have less than five chords, often as few as three. As a result, this song highlights the depth of Jeff Lynne's compositional prowess.

Famous quotes containing the words fine, light and/or orchestra:

[I]f a Fine Lady thinks fit to giggle at Church, or a Great Beau come in drunk to a Play, either shall be sure to hear of it in my ensuing Paper: For merely as a well-bred Man, I cannot bear these Enormities.
    Richard Steele (1672–1729)

Do we write books so that they shall merely be read? Don’t we also write them for employment in the household? For one that is read from start to finish, thousands are leafed through, other thousands lie motionless, others are jammed against mouseholes, thrown at rats, others are stood on, sat on, drummed on, have gingerbread baked on them or are used to light pipes.
    —G.C. (Georg Christoph)

“Pop” Wyman ruled here with a firm but gentle hand; no drunken man was ever served at the bar; no married man was allowed to play at the tables; across the face of the large clock was written “Please Don’t Swear,” and over the orchestra appeared the gentle admonition, “Don’t Shoot the Pianist—He’s Doing His Damndest.”
