Smithsonian Networks

Smithsonian Networks (SNI/SI) is a joint venture between CBS Corporation's Showtime Networks and the Smithsonian Institution. The service consists of Smithsonian Channel, Smithsonian On Demand, and smithsonianchannel.com.

The network’s content is inspired by the Smithsonian Institution’s museums, research facilities and magazines – and features original non-fiction programming that covers a wide range of historical, scientific and cultural subjects. On September 26, 2007, the Smithsonian Channel HD began airing on DirecTV's new HD lineup. Dish Network added the HD channel on May 12, 2008. Dish Network has since dropped the Smithsonian Channel HD from their programming line up effective February 1, 2009. Dish Network provided no warning to subscribers.

In 2010, Smithsonian Networks entered into an agreement with Comcast for broadcast of the channel until 2020. An initial air date has not been given.

Smithsonian Networks is also available on Time Warner Cable, AT&T U-verse and Charter Communications in high definition and standard definition and on Verizon FiOS and Mediacom in high definition. It is also available from On Demand in both high definition and standard definition.

In addition, full episodes and clips are available on devices such as the iPad, Android as well as streaming media devices such as Roku.

Famous quotes containing the words smithsonian and/or networks:

Compare the history of the novel to that of rock ‘n’ roll. Both started out a minority taste, became a mass taste, and then splintered into several subgenres. Both have been the typical cultural expressions of classes and epochs. Both started out aggressively fighting for their share of attention, novels attacking the drama, the tract, and the poem, rock attacking jazz and pop and rolling over classical music.
    W. T. Lhamon, U.S. educator, critic. “Material Differences,” Deliberate Speed: The Origins of a Cultural Style in the American 1950s, Smithsonian (1990)

To be perfectly, brutally honest, those of us who are still carrying diaper everywhere we go are not at our most scintillating time of life....We need to remember that at one time in our lives, we all had senses of humor and knew things that were going on in the world. And if we just keep our social networks open, there will be people ready to listen when we once again have intelligent things to say.
    Louise Lague (20th century)
