Smith Point County Park - Hurricane Sandy

Hurricane Sandy

All three of the breaches that cut new inlets through Fire Island joining the Atlantic with Great South Bay caused by high tides associated with Hurricane Sandy in October 2012 occurred in the vicinity of the park. Two of the breaches have been closed by multimillion dollar dredging projects (one within the park itself on its east end near Moriches Inlet and one across Moriches Inlet just inside of Cupsogue Beach County Park. The third breach just west of the park in Otis Pike Fire Island High Dune Wilderness at area called Old Inlet remains open while officials debate whether to tamper with an event inside a wilderness area. That breach grew to 1,171 feet in width in February 2013. Breaches at Old Inlet have occurred before and closed on their own.
