Locations
The novel is set in a fictional part of Yorkshire, comprising the parishes of Briarfield and Nunneley. The main town of the district is Stillborough. The Keeldar family home in Shirley is called Fieldhead. Charlotte Brontë based Fieldhead on the Elizabethan manor house Oakwell Hall.
