Shamsher Singh Sandhu

Shamsher Singh Sandhu M.A; M.Ed.(born March 3,1937) is a well known Canadian of Punjabi origin Gazal writer- or Gazalgo. He is best known for his beautiful Gazals. He lives in Calgary, Alberta, Canada since 1997. He learned the art of writing Gazal and started writing Gazals in 2002 after the age of 65. Since then he has published 6 books (containig 513 Gazals) as follows:-

• 1- Ga Zindgi de geet toon - (Printed & published in Calgary)- 2003
• 2- Jot sahas de jaga - (Printed & published in Calgary)- 2005
• 3- Ban shua toon - (Printed & published in Calgary)- 2006
• 4- Roshni de bhal - (Printed & published in Calgary)- 2007
• 5- sulagdi leek - (Printed & published in Calgary)- 2008 All these five books have been published in one volume " Geet ton sulagdi leek tak "by Lok geet pakashan, Chandigarh, Punjab, India. - 2009
• 6- Dhal rahe aye surja- 2011 (Lok geet pakashan, Chandigarh) 2011

In 2003 he prepared Punjabi version of Canadian National anthum 'O Canada' which has been placed in the archives of Canada.

In 2005 (the centenial year of Alberta) he prepared Punjabi version of 'Alberta Song'. Punjabi version of Canadian National anthum 'O Canada' and Punjabi version of 'Alberta Song' have been placed in the permanent records of the Assembly of Alberta. Shamsher Singh Sandhu was honored with a medal by the government of Alberta.

In 2010 Shamsher Singh Sandhu was awarded the honor of "Outstanding Calgary Senior" in Arts Category.

In a book ' Triviene' published from Voncover (B.C) some of his selected gazals have been published in Gurmukhi and Shahmukhi script.

His selected verses have also been included in a book by very well-known Gazalgos Sulakhan Sarhadi and Gurdial Roshan (2011).

He founded Writers Forum, Calgary in 2005 and since then he is serving as president of this organization. It is litrary society which provides a common platform for Punjabi, hindi, urdu and english writers of Indian and Pakistani origin.

Many litrary and other organizations from India and Canada have honored him.

ਕੈਲਗਰੀ, ਕੈਨੇਡਾ ਨਿਵਾਸੀ, ਪੌਣੇ 76 ਸਾਲਾਂ ਦਾ ਪ੍ਰੋ. ਸ਼ਮਸ਼ੇਰ ਸਿੰਘ ਸੰਧੂ ਐਮ. ਏ; ਐਮ. ਐਡ., ਪੀ. ਈ. ਐਸ-1 Retired ਪੰਜਾਬੀ ਲਿਖਾਰੀ ਜਗਤ ਵਿਚ ਇਕੋ ਇਕ ਅਜਿਹਾ ਸ਼ਾਇਰ ਹੈ ਜਿਸ ਨੇ 2002 ਤੋਂ 65 ਸਾਲ ਦੀ ਉਮਰ ਪਿੱਛੋਂ ਗ਼ਜ਼ਲ ਲਿਖਣੀ ਸਿੱਖੀ ਤੇ ਲਿਖਣੀ ਸ਼ੁਰੂ ਕੀਤੀ। ਉਹ 1997 ਤੋਂ ਕੈਨੇਡਾ ਵਿਚ ਹੈ।

ਹੁਣ ਤਕ ਉਹ 6 ਸੰਗ੍ਰਹਾਂ ਵਿਚ 513 ਮਿਆਰੀ ਗ਼ਜ਼ਲਾਂ (1) ਗਾ ਜਿੰਦਗੀ ਦੇ ਗੀਤ ਤੂੰ- ਕੈਲਗਰੀ 2003 (2) ਜੋਤ ਸਾਹਸ ਦੀ ਜਗਾ- ਕੈਲਗਰੀ 2005 (3) ਬਣ ਸ਼ੁਆ ਤੂੰ- ਕੈਲਗਰੀ 2006 (4) ਰੌਸ਼ਨੀ ਦੀ ਭਾਲ- ਕੈਲਗਰੀ 2007 (5) ਸੁਲਗਦੀ ਲੀਕ- ਕੈਲਗਰੀ 2008 ਇਹ ਪਹਿਲੇ ਪੰਜੇ ਸੰਗ੍ਰਹਿ ਜੋ ਪਹਿਲਾਂ ਕੈਲਗਰੀ ਵਿਚ ਛਪੇ ਸਨ, 2009 ਵਿਚ ਲੋਕ ਗੀਤ ਪ੍ਰਕਾਸ਼ਨ, ਚੰਡੀਗੜ ਵੱਲੋਂ ਇਕੋ ਸੈਂਚੀ ‘ਗੀਤ ਤੋਂ ਸੁਲਗਦੀ ਲੀਕ ਤਕ’ ਵਿਚ ਵੀ ਛਪ ਚੁੱਕੇ ਹਨ। (6) ਢਲ ਰਹੇ ਐ ਸੂਰਜਾ- ਲੋਕ ਗੀਤ ਪ੍ਰਕਾਸ਼ਨ, ਚੰਡੀਗੜ 2011 ਵੈਨਕੂਵਰ ਤੋਂ ਛਪੀ ‘ਤ੍ਰੈਵੈਣੀ’ ਪੁਸਤਕ ਵਿਚ ਉਹਨਾਂ ਦੀਆਂ ਚੋਣਵੀਆਂ ਗ਼ਜ਼ਲਾਂ ਗੁਰਮੁਖੀ ਤੇ ਸ਼ਾਹਮੁਖੀ ਵਿੱਚ ਛਪੀਆਂ ਹਨ। ਉਸਦੇ ਚੋਣਵੇਂ ਸ਼ਿਅਰ, ਮਸ਼ਹੂਰ ਗ਼ਜ਼ਲਗੋ ਸੁਲੱਖਣ ਸਰਹੱਦੀ ਅਤੇ ਗੁਰਦਿਆਲ ਰੌਸ਼ਨ ਵਲੋਂ 2011 ਵਿਚ ਛਾਪੀ ਗਈ ਵਿਸ਼ਵ ਭਰ ਦੇ ਗ਼ਜ਼ਲਕਾਰਾਂ ਦੇ ਉਮਦਾ ਚੋਣਵੇਂ ਪੰਜਾਬੀ ਸ਼ਿਅਰਾਂ ਦੀ ਕਿਤਾਬ ਵਿਚ ਵੀ ਸ਼ਾਮਲ ਹਨ। ‘ਗੀਤ ਤੋਂ ਸੁਲਗਦੀ ਲੀਕ ਤਕ’ www.apnaorg.com ਅਤੇ vidhapunjabi ਤੇ ਵੀ ਪੜ੍ਹੀ ਜਾ ਸਕਦੀ ਹੈ। 2003 ਵਿਚ ਉਸਦਾ ਤਿਆਰ ਕੀਤਾ ਕੈਨੇਡਾ ਦੇ ਰਾਸ਼ਟਰ ਗੀਤ ‘ਓ ਕੈਨੇਡਾ’ ਦਾ ਪੰਜਾਬੀ ਰੂਪ ਕੈਨੇਡਾ ਦੇ ਆਰਕਾਈਵਜ਼ ਵਿਚ ਰਖਿਆ ਗਿਆ। ਅਤੇ ਉਸਦਾ ਤਿਆਰ ਕੀਤਾ ‘ਓ ਕੈਨੇਡਾ’ ਅਤੇ ਅਲਬਰਟਾ ਸੂਬੇ ਦੇ ਗੀਤ ‘ਅਲਬਰਟਾ‘ ਦਾ ਪੰਜਾਬੀ ਰੂਪ ਅਲਬਰਟਾ ਅਸੈਂਬਲੀ ਦੇ ਸਥਾਈ ਰੀਕਾਰਡ ਤੇ ਵੀ ਰੱਖੇ ਗਏ ਹਨ। 2005 ਵਿਚ ਅਲਬਰਟਾ ਸਰਕਾਰ ਵੱਲੋਂ ਪ੍ਰੋ. ਸੰਧੂ ਨੂੰ ਇਸ ਕੰਮ ਲਈ ਇਕ ਮੈਡਲ ਨਾਲ ਸਨਮਾਨਿਤ ਕੀਤਾ ਗਿਆ। 2010 ਵਿਚ ਉਸ ਨੂੰ Outstanding Calgary Senior ਵਜੋਂ ਸਨਮਾਨਿਆ ਗਿਆ। ਸਾਹਿਤਕ ਪ੍ਰਾਪਤੀਆਂ ਲਈ, ਕੈਨੇਡਾ ਅਤੇ ਭਾਰਤ ਦੀਆਂ ਕਈ ਸੰਸਥਾਵਾਂ ਉਹਨਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਸਨਮਾਨਿਤ ਕਰ ਚੁੱਕੀਆਂ ਹਨ। 2005 ਵਿਚ ਉਹਨਾਂ ਰਾਈਟਰਜ਼ ਫੋਰਮ, ਕੈਲਗਰੀ ਬਣਾਈ ਤੋਂ ਓਦੋਂ ਤੋਂ ਹੀ ਉਹ ਰਾਈਟਰਜ਼ ਫੋਰਮ, ਕੈਲਗਰੀ ਦੇ ਪ੍ਰਧਾਨ ਦੀ ਸੇਵਾ ਨਿਭਾ ਰਹੇ ਹਨ। ਇਹ ਸੰਸਥਾ ਹਿੰਦੋਸਤਾਨ ਤੇ ਪਾਕਿਸਤਾਨ ਮੂਲ ਦੇ ਪੰਜਾਬੀ, ਹਿੰਦੀ, ਉਰਦੂ ਤੇ ਅੰਗ੍ਰੇਜ਼ੀ ਦੇ ਲਿਖਾਰੀਆਂ ਲਈ ਸਾਂਝਾ ਪਲੇਟ ਫਾਰਮ ਪਰਦਾਨ ਕਰਦੀ ਹੈ ਤੇ ਸਾਂਝ ਪਾਕੇ ਅਮਨ ਹਾਮੀਂ ਤਾਕਤਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਮਜ਼ਬੂਤ ਕਰਦੀ ਹੈ। ਜੇ ਤੁਹਾਨੂੰ ਗ਼ਜ਼ਲ ਪੜ੍ਹਣ ਦਾ ਸ਼ੌਕ ਹੈ ਤਾਂ ਤੁਸੀਂ ਉਸਦੀ ਕੋਈ ਵੀ ਕਿਤਾਬ ਬਿਨਾ ਖਰਚ ਈ ਮੇਲ ਕਰਕੇ ‘ਮੰਗਵਾ ਸਕਦੇ ਹੋ ਸ਼ਮਸ਼ੇਰ ਸਿੰਘ ਸੰਧੂ Calgary Ph. 001- 403- 285-5609
