It was originally used by used by students to learn how to swim and for general recreation. In its formation, mud from the river bottom was removed to build up the banks. In 1949 the park was renamed to Sewell Park in honor of mathematics professor S.M. Sewell.

In February 2008, over 15,000 people gathered in Sewell Park to attend a rally for U.S. presidential candidate Barack Obama.
