Synopsis
The program is hosted by Dr. Peter Salgo, an Emmy Award winning medical correspondent, and features a panel of actual practicing community-based and research physicians, as well as other experts. Dr. Louis Papa and Dr. Lisa Harris are the only other regular panelists, other than Peter Salgo, representing the perspective of the primary care physician. The panel also includes an individual that has had experience with the disease or topic of discussion. Real anonymous medical cases are presented as a launching point for discussion to debate the pros and cons of diagnostic testing, interpret test results, and prescribe the best course of action.
According to the Second Opinion web page on PBS's web site,
"The goal of the series is to improve doctor/patient communication and empower viewers to take charge of their own healthcare, and in turn, help them navigate the medical system for better health outcomes. Second Opinion focuses on health literacy in a way that is relevant and accessible to both viewers and to physicians, in a format that engages and entertains viewers."
