Sea Witch (clipper) - Hong-Kong To New York Record Holder, 1849-2003

Hong-Kong To New York Record Holder, 1849-2003

Howland & Aspinwall gave the command of the Sea Witch to Captain Robert Waterman, known in the trade as "Bully Bob" Waterman. In 1847, under Waterman, she made a record-setting run from Hong Kong to New York in 77 days. She lowered this record to 74 days under the same captain in 1849. This March 1849 mark is one of the longest-lived human speed records, bettered only in May 2003 by the trimaran "Great American II" in 72 days and 21 hour. Sea Witch continues to hold the Hong Kong-New York record for a monohulled sailing vessel.

Famous quotes containing the words york and/or record:

Half the testimony in the Bobbitt case sounded like Sally Jesse Raphael. Juries watch programs like this and are ready to listen.
William Geimer, U.S. law educator. New York Times, p. B18 (January 28, 1994)

That is what the highest criticism really is, the record of one’s own soul. It is more fascinating than history, as it is concerned simply with oneself. It is more delightful than philosophy, as its subject is concrete and not abstract, real and not vague. It is the only civilised form of autobiography.
    Oscar Wilde (1854–1900)
