In 1997, Scripps Whittier Diabetes Institute implemented Project Dulce which enhances traditional diabetes care for underserved individuals by connecting primary care physicians with a bilingual, culturally competent team of professionals who are specially trained in techniques for managing diabetes. After 1 year in the program, participants showed significant improvements in HbA1c, total cholesterol, low-density lipoprotein cholesterol, and diastolic blood pressure.
