In August 2009 Lynch started to publish an online novel called Queen of the Iron Sands on his website. Chapters were originally scheduled to be released each week. The story is a science fantasy romance, in the style of Edgar Rice Burroughs' Barsoom novels, about a female aviator and ex-WASP who is transported to a fantastic Mars. After a long hiatus that began in September 2009, Lynch resumed posting new chapters in June 2010.

Famous quotes containing the words queen of, queen, iron and/or sands:
“O Queen of air and darkness,
I think tis truth you say,
And I shall die to-morrow;

“We used chamber-pots a good deal.... My mother ... loved to repeat: When did the queen reign over China? This whimsical and harmless scatological pun was my first introduction to the wonderful world of verbal transformations, and also a first perception that a joke need not be funny to give pleasure.”
—Angela Carter (19401992)
“Hate-hardened heart, O heart of iron,
iron is iron till it is rust.
There never was a war that was
not inward; I must
fight till I have conquered in myself what
causes war, but I would not believe it.”
—Marianne Moore (18871972)
“... continual hard labor deadens the energies of the soul, and benumbs the faculties of the mind; the ideas become confined, the mind barren, and, like the scorching sands of Arabia, produces nothing; or, like the uncultivated soil, brings forth thorns and thistles. Again, continual hard labor irritates our tempers and sours our dispositions; the whole system become worn out with toil and fatigue; nature herself becomes almost exhausted, and we care but little whether we live or die.”
—Maria Stewart (18031879)
