Schuh - History

History

Schuh was established by Founding Director Sandy Alexander in 1981, with a single shop in North Bridge Arcade, Edinburgh. The company became part of the Glasgow-based Goldbergs retail group, which ceased trading in 1991. Alexander led a management buyout, backed by capital from development agency Scottish Enterprise, to allow Schuh to continue trading. As of May 2011 the chain remained independent, with 76 stores in the UK and Ireland. Schuh's head office is in Livingston, West Lothian, Scotland. Schuh's flagship store opened in 2004 at 200 Oxford Street, London. The company was taken over by Genesco, a company who own Journeys, in 2011. Schuh's top competitor is Office.

Famous quotes containing the word history:

The second day of July 1776, will be the most memorable epoch in the history of America. I am apt to believe that it will be celebrated by succeeding generations as the great anniversary festival. It ought to be commemorated, as the day of deliverance, by solemn acts of devotion to God Almighty. It ought to be solemnized with pomp and parade, with shows, games, sports, guns, bells, bonfires and illuminations, from one end of this continent to the other, from this time forward forever more
    John Adams (1735–1826)

The history of the world is none other than the progress of the consciousness of freedom.
    Georg Wilhelm Friedrich Hegel (1770–1831)

... in America ... children are instructed in the virtues of the system they live under, as though history had achieved a happy ending in American civics.
    Mary McCarthy (1912–1989)
