Famous quotes containing the words light, opera and/or company:

Now God be praised, that to believing souls
Gives light in darkness, comfort in despair!
    William Shakespeare (1564–1616)

Opera once was an important social instrument—especially in Italy. With Rossini and Verdi people were listening to opera together and having the same catharsis with the same story, the same moral dilemmas. They were holding hands in the darkness. That has gone. Now perhaps they are holding hands watching television.
    Luciano Berio (b. 1925)

In the old days, one married a wife; now one forms a company with a female partner, or moves in to live with a friend. And then one seduces the partner, or defiles the friend.
    J. August Strindberg (1849–1912)
