A relative or descendant of Lakhan Sawant, he made himself independent of Bijapur in 1627. 1640 - 1641 Shrimant Som Sawant I Bhonsle, Sir Desai of Sawantwadi, eldest son of Shrimant Khem Sawant I Bhonsle, Sir Desai of Sawantwadi, educ. privately. Reigned for eighteen months. He d.s.p. 1641 (succ. by his younger brother).

1641 - 1665 Shrimant Lakhan Sawant Bhonsle, Sir Desai of Sawantwadi, third son of Shrimant Khem Sawant I Bhonsle, Sir Desai of Sawantwadi, educ. privately. Succeeded on the death of his brother, 1641. Became a vassal of the Mahratta Maharaja, Shivaji the Great, who confirmed him as Sir Desai of the Southern Konkan or Kudal, including Sawantwadi, 1661. He d.s.p. at Wadi Fort, 1665 (succ. by his younger brother).

1665 - 1675 Shrimant Phond Sawant I Bhonsle, Sir Desai of Sawantwadi, second son of Shrimant Khem Sawant I Bhonsle, Sir Desai of Sawantwadi, educ. privately. Succeeded on the death of his younger half-brother, 1665. He d. at Wadi Fort, 1675, having had issue two sons: •1) Shrimant Khem Sawant II Bhonsle Bahadur, Sir Desai of Sawantwadi - see below. •2) Shrimant Nar Sawant Bhonsle. 1675 - 1709 Shrimant Khem Sawant II Bhonsle Bahadur, Sir Desai of Sawantwadi, elder son of Shrimant Phond Sawant I Bhonsle, Sir Desai of Sawantwadi, educ. privately. Succeeded on the death of his father, 1675. He established his independence from the Maratha rulers shortly after succeeding to the gadi, and later concluded a treaty with the British against the pirate Admiral Kanoji Angre of Kolaba. Granted the title of Bahadurin recognition of his services against the Portuguese. Succeeded on the death of his paternal uncle, 1709. m. six wives, including (first) Shrimant Akhand Soubhagyavati Lakshmibai Sahib Bhonsle. m. (second) Shrimant Akhand Soubhagyavati Savitribai Sahib Bhonsle. He d. at Wadi Fort, 2 January 1738, having had issue, eleven sons and six daughters: •1) Shrimant Nar Sawant Bhonsle (s/o Lakshmibai), educ. privately. Rebelled and seized Wadi Fort and briefly imprisoned his father in 1715. m. Shrimant Akhand Soubhagyavati Rajasbai Sahib Bhonsle. 1726 in which they handed over Dicholi Fort and its surrounding districts to him. m. a lady from the family of Shrimant Sardar Sidhojirao I Bahirjirao Sahib Ghorpade, Hindurao, Mamlukatmadar Senapati, Chief of Sandur. A powerful nobleman who made himself virtually independent in 1817.

Appointed as Heir Apparent by his grandfather in 1728, and acted as Regent on his behalf from 1728 until his death in 1738. Ascended the gadi at Wadi Fort, 2 January 1738. Succeeded on the death of his father, 1755. Reigned under the regency of his mother until he came of age, 1763. Concluded treaties of perpetual peace and friendship with the HEIC on 7 April 1765 and 24 October 1766. Granted the peacock feather and the hereditary title of Raja Bahadur by the Mughal Emperor 1765 and formally installed as such at Sawantwadi, 11 May 1785. m. (first) 1763, H.H. 1805 - 1807 H.H. Raja Shrimant Ramchandra Sawant II Bhonsle Bahadur, Sir Desai of Sawantwadi, elder son of Shrimant Shriram Sawant Bhonsle, by his wife, Shrimant Akhand Soubhagyavati Yamunabai alias Dadi Sahib. Given in adoption to the Rani Regent Lakshmibai, after his father had defeated Phond Sawant and taken Wadi in 1805. He was k. in his bed by Kalu Bikaji Patel of Bari and Vishnu Kamat when they captured Wadi, 1809, having had issue, one son: •1) Shrimant Appa Sahib Ramachandra Sawant Bhonsle. Sometime pretender to the throne. Banished from the state and granted a pension, so long as he remained peacefully within British territory, 1847.

1807 - 1808 H.H. Raja Shrimant Phond Sawant IV Sahib Bhonsle Bahadur, Sir Desai of Sawantwadi. Adopted by the Rani Regent Savitribai, 1807 and ascended the gadi on the same day, but was strangled by Appa Sahib Desai, 1808.

1804 - 1805 & 1808 - 1812 H.H. Raja Shrimant Phond Sawant III Bhonsle Bahadur, Sir Desai of Sawantwadi, only surviving son of Shrimant Som Sawant Bhonsle, by his wife, Shrimant Akhand Soubhagyavati Jayawant Sahiba, educ. privately. Appealed to the Maharaja of Kolhapur for help after the murder of his father, in December 1803. Killedar of Yeshwantgarh 1803-1804 & 1805-1808. Recognised as the rightful heir and joined the Kolhapur forces when they invaded Sawantwadi. Recognised by the Rani Regent Lakshmibai as successor of her husband in 1804. Fled to Kudal and rejoined the Kolhapur forces, when Shriram Sawant defeated him in battle and took Wadi in 1805. Ascended the gadi, 1808. m. (first) H.H. Shrimant Akhand Soubhagyavati Rani ...bai Raje Sahib Bhonsle (k. at Torgal, by her brother for her infidelity), daughter of Meherban Shrimant Subharao Shinde, Sena Khas Khel, Sena Dhurandhar Vishwasvidhi, Samust Shiv Dhurandhar, Chief of Torgal. m. (second) 1803, H.H. Shrimant Akhand Soubhagyavati Rani ...bai Raje Sahib Bhonsle, a sister of Shrimant Aba Sahib Nesreekar. Raja Shrimant Phond Sawant, also had issue, an eldest son by a concubine: ◦3) Shrimant Sardar Dhindo Govind. Cdr. of the Sawantwadi forces sent against Kolhapur. He was k. in battle, at Nandos, September 1806.

1812 - 1867 H.H. Raja Shrimant Khem Sawant IV Bhonsle Bahadur, Sir Desai of Sawantwadi. b. at Wadi Fort, 1804, younger son of H.H. Raja Shrimant Phond Sawant III Bhonsle Bahadur, Sir Desai of Sawantwadi, by his second wife, the Nesreekar Rani Sahib, educ. privately. Succeeded on the death of his father, 3 October 1812. Reigned under a Council of Regency until he came of age and was invested with full ruling powers, at Wadi Fort, 11 February 1823. He faced severe insurrections by members of his family and his nobles several times during his reign, most seriously in 1844-1849, and needed the assistance of British troops to bring them into line. Received a sanad of adoption, 11 March 1862. m. (first) at Wadi Fort, 1815, H.H.
