In 1990 SAPPI purchased five UK Paper Mills: Blackburn Mill, Wolvercote Mill, Keynsham Mill, Fife Mill, and Nash Mill. In 1996 SAPPI were investigated by the European Commission for illegal price fixing in various countries in the EU. Although found guilty of earning millions by fixing the price of paper printer by printer their fine was reduced for co operation with the cartel investigating unit in Bruxelles. Other companies implicated were fined a total of $145 million. By 2007 all the mills in the UK had been closed by SAPPI resulting in the loss of almost 2000 jobs. On the 29 September 2008, Sappi purchased two paper mills in Finland, 1 in Switzerland and 1 in Germany from the M-real company. in 2011 SAPPI announced closure of their Swiss production site.
