San Pablo Guelatao - The Town

The Town

It is the birth place of Mexico's most famous leader, President Benito Juárez. At that time, Guelatao had a population of fewer than 100 people, and fell under the jurisdiction of the larger neighbouring town of Ixtlán. Juárez was therefore baptised in the church at Ixtlán, which is now known as Ixtlán de Juárez in his honour. However, Guelatao became an independent municipality in 1824. The town has a small museum dedicated to Juárez.

XEGLO, a government-run indigenous community radio station that broadcasts in Zapotec, Mixe and Chinantec, is based in Guelatao.

Famous quotes containing the word town:

    Mr. Mum’s Rudesheimer
And the church of St. Geryon
    Are the two things alone
    That deserve to be known
In the body-and-soul-stinking town of Cologne.
    Samuel Taylor Coleridge (1772–1834)

All of childhood’s unanswered questions must finally be passed back to the town and answered there. Heroes and bogey men, values and dislikes, are first encountered and labeled in that early environment. In later years they change faces, places and maybe races, tactics, intensities and goals, but beneath those penetrable masks they wear forever the stocking-capped faces of childhood.
    Maya Angelou (b. 1928)
