Samson Unit

Samson Unit, or Shimshon (שמשון), was a special forces unit within the Israeli Defense Forces. Named after the biblical figure who lived in the vicinity. Shimshon unit's modus operandi focused on undercover military operations against Palestinian militants in the Gaza Strip. Shimshon was disbanded in 1995 following the Oslo Accords, when senior military and political leaders welcomed the long-awaited peace with their Palestinian neighbors. The Samson Unit had a “sister unit” Duvdevan, which operated in Judea and Samaria.

Famous quotes containing the words samson and/or unit:

Jack, eating rotten cheese, did say,
‘Like Samson I my thousands slay.’
    Benjamin Franklin (1706–1790)

During the Suffragette revolt of 1913 I ... [urged] that what was needed was not the vote, but a constitutional amendment enacting that all representative bodies shall consist of women and men in equal numbers, whether elected or nominated or coopted or registered or picked up in the street like a coroner’s jury. In the case of elected bodies the only way of effecting this is by the Coupled Vote. The representative unit must not be a man or a woman but a man and a woman.
    George Bernard Shaw (1856–1950)
