Athletics

SIU participates in NCAA Division II athletics. Salem had been a charter member of the West Virginia Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WVIAC) in 1924, but left that conference in 2010. Since that time, the SIU Tigers have competed in the Eastern College Athletic Conference in various sports including basketball, baseball, softball, and soccer. Salem is one of four West Virginia schools that will join the Great Midwest Athletic Conference in July 2013. The other three schools are former WVIAC colleagues of Salem that had been cast adrift in the upcoming breakup of the WVIAC.

On November 25, 2008, Salem's sports programs were penalized by the NCAA for major violations including lack of institutional control and failure to monitor the athletic department properly. The school's athletic programs were placed under three years' probation by the NCAA and were forced to vacate records from several years of athletic competition, as well as a reduction of available grant-in-aid to student-athletes during the probation period.
