Sale Swing Bridge

The Sale Swing Bridge, located on the South Gippsland Highway 5 km from the city of Sale, Victoria, Australia, spans the Latrobe River at its junction with the Thomson River.

Designed by John Grainger and built in 1883 by the Victorian government, it was the first movable bridge built in Victoria. Its wrought-iron structure, 45 metres long, pivots on cylindrical steel columns. At its peak, the bridge was opened up to 20 times a day, allowing the movement of steamers between Sale and Melbourne.

The bridge underwent major restoration works towards the end of 2003, which were completed by the start of 2006.

The Sale Swing Bridge was used as a set in 2007 for the filming of the 2008 film, The Tender Hook, starring Hugo Weaving and Rose Byrne.

Famous quotes containing the words sale, swing and/or bridge:

    People buy their necessities in shops and have to pay dearly for them because they have to assist in paying for what is also on sale there but only rarely finds purchasers: the luxury and amusement goods. So it is that luxury continually imposes a tax on the simple people who have to do without it.
    Friedrich Nietzsche (1844–1900)

    The bells, I say, the bells break down their tower;
    And swing I know not where.
    Hart Crane (1899–1932)

    What need the bridge much broader than the flood?
    William Shakespeare (1564–1616)
