Saint Mary's Gaels Baseball
The Saint Mary's Gaels are the athletic teams that compete at Saint Mary's College of California in Moraga, California. The nickname applies to the college's intercollegiate NCAA Division-I teams and club sports. The nickname was given to the school's football team (now discontinued) in 1926 by a writer for the now defunct San Francisco Call-Bulletin. The school's previous nickname was the Saints, although the baseball team was known as the Phoenix until the 1940s.
The college has men's teams in basketball, baseball, cross country, golf, soccer and tennis and women's teams in basketball, cross country, lacrosse, rowing, soccer, softball, tennis and volleyball. Most teams compete in the West Coast Conference. The school also offers a number of club sports.

Its fleece was white as snow,
And every where that Mary went
The lamb was sure to go;
He followed her to school one day
That was against the rule,
It made the children laugh and play,
To see a lamb at school.”
—Sarah Josepha Buell Hale (17881879)
“For the great Gaels of Ireland
Are the men that God made mad,
For all their wars are merry
And all their songs are sad.”
—Gilbert Keith Chesterton (18741936)
“It is not heroin or cocaine that makes one an addict, it is the need to escape from a harsh reality. There are more television addicts, more baseball and football addicts, more movie addicts, and certainly more alcohol addicts in this country than there are narcotics addicts.”
