Sacral Spinal Nerve 1 - Muscles

Muscles

S1 supplies many muscles, either directly or through nerves originating from S1. They are not innervated with S1 as single origin, but partly by S1 and partly by other spinal nerves. The muscles are:

  • gluteus maximus muscle
  • gluteus medius muscle
  • gluteus minimus muscle
  • tensor fasciae latae
  • piriformis
  • obturator internus muscle
  • inferior gemellus
  • superior gemellus
  • quadratus femoris
  • semitendinosus
  • gastrocnemius
  • flexor hallucis longus
  • abductor digiti minimi
  • quadratus plantae

Famous quotes containing the word muscles:

As the strong man exults in his physical ability, delighting in such exercises as call his muscles into action, so glories the analyst in that moral activity which disentangles.
    Edgar Allan Poe (1809–1845)

    All of this,
    and the curious knee-cap,
    fitted above the wrought greaves,
and the sharp muscles of your back
which the tunic could not cover.
    Hilda Doolittle (1886–1961)

What is this beast, she thought,
    with muscles on his arms
    like a bag of snakes?
What is this moss on his legs?
What prickly plant grows on his cheeks?
What is this voice as deep as a dog?
    Anne Sexton (1928–1974)
