Settlement and Population Numbers

The 2001 UK Census recorded 15,160 Russian-born residents. Estimates published by the Office for National Statistics suggest that the resident Russian-born population of the UK was 32,000 in 2009. The supposed population surge led to jocular nicknames for London such as "Londongrad" and "Moscow-on-the-Thames".

In London and the South East there are a number of Russian schools aimed at transmitting Russian language and culture to the children of Russian immigrant parents.

The Russian ambassador to the United Kingdom Yuri Fedotov has stated that local Russians fall victim to xenophobia and that the police often refuses to investigate those incidents.

The total number of people of Russian descent is close to 300,000

Famous quotes containing the words settlement, population and/or numbers:

Before I get through with you, you will have a clear case for divorce and so will my wife. Now, the first thing to do is arrange for a settlement. You take the children, your husband takes the house, Junior burns down the house, you take the insurance and I take you!
S.J. Perelman, U.S. screenwriter, Arthur Sheekman, Will Johnstone, and Norman Z. McLeod. Groucho Marx, Monkey Business, terms for a divorce settlement proposed while trying to woo Lucille Briggs (Thelma Todd)

[Madness] is the jail we could all end up in. And we know it. And watch our step. For a lifetime. We behave. A fantastic and entire system of social control, by the threat of example as effective over the general population as detention centers in dictatorships, the image of the madhouse floats through every mind for the course of its lifetime.
    Kate Millett (b. 1934)

    Green grow the rushes-O
    What is your one-O?
—Unknown. Carol of the Numbers (l. 2–3)
