Romero became a candidate for Salt Lake County Mayor in September 2011. He focused on the environment, education, and economic development.
In December 2011, Romero was criticized for accepting contributions from the Talisker Corporation and other supporters of the controversial Ski Link proposal to build a gondola connecting The Canyons ski resort to Salt Lake County. After several months spent raising campaign funds from proponents of Ski Link while Romero reportedly was 'studying' the merits of the proposal, he ultimately took a mild position in opposition to Ski Link in February 2012.
