Ullman was born in Eilat, Israel, to American parents Laura (née Ehrenkranz), a teacher, and Brian Ullman, a printer. Ullman is Jewish. His maternal grandfather, Joseph Ehrenkranz, is an Orthodox Rabbi in Stamford, Connecticut, and Ullman was raised in the Conservative and Orthodox denominations of Judaism. After his first birthday, his family moved to Fairfield, Connecticut, in the United States. When Ullman was younger, his father worked as a clown. He attended camp the following summer and landed the role of Peter Pan (both lead and supporting roles), which helped him discover his talents in acting, singing, dancing, and reading drama novels.

Ricky Ullman speaks fluent Hebrew & taught himself how to play the trombone. Ullman was selected to attend the HOBY youth leadership program of Connecticut in March 2003 where he was selected as the "outstanding ambassador" enabling him to attend the HOBY World Leadership Congress in the summer of 2003. He is a graduate of Fairfield Warde High School. He lived in Southern California with his friends, two of them being Lisa and Jess Origlasso from the pop band the Veronicas. Currently he resides in New York City.

Famous quotes containing the words early and/or life:

    Yet, haply, in some lull of life,
    Some Truce of God which breaks its strife,
    The worldling’s eyes shall gather dew,
    Dreaming in throngful city ways
    Of winter joys his boyhood knew;
    And dear and early friends—the few
    John Greenleaf Whittier (1807–1892)

    I wage not any feud with Death
    For changes wrought on form and face;
    No lower life that earth’s embrace
    May breed with him can fright my faith.
    Alfred Tennyson (1809–1892)
