Family and Education
Adopted as a baby, his birth mother is actress Sinéad Cusack, with whom he was later reunited. This was revealed in the last week of his unsuccessful 2007 Dáil election campaign, during which Cusack, a vocal opponent of the Iraq War, canvassed for him. In May 2013, he revealed that theatre director Vincent Dowling, who died aged 83, was his biological father. He is the biological half-brother of actor Max Irons and photographer Samuel Irons.
He was raised in Glenageary, by adoptive parents David and Valerie Boyd Barrett, attending St Michael's College in Dublin 4. He holds a Master's Degree in English Literature from University College Dublin.

Famous quotes containing the words family and/or education:
“My ambition for station was always easily controlled. If the place came to me it was welcome. But it never seemed to me worth seeking at the cost of self-respect, or independence. My family were not historic; they were well-to-do, did not hold or seek office. It was easy for me to be contented in private life. An honor was no honor to me, if obtained by my own seeking.”
—Rutherford Birchard Hayes (18221893)
“I envy neither the heart nor the head of any legislator who has been born to an inheritance of privileges, who has behind him ages of education, dominion, civilization, and Christianity, if he stands opposed to the passage of a national education bill, whose purpose is to secure education to the children of those who were born under the shadow of institutions which made it a crime to read.”
—Frances Ellen Watkins Harper (18251911)
