During the American Revolution, Bache served on the Board of War. His wife, Sally Bache (1743–1808), was widely known for her patriotism and charitable activities.
Franklin later arranged an appointment for Bache as the US Postmaster General (1776-1782), to succeed him. After Franklin's death in 1790, Bache and Sally lived off her inheritance from Franklin, moving their family to a farm or estate in 1794 along the Delaware River north of Philadelphia.

Famous quotes containing the word years:
“In England, I was quite struck to see how forward the girls are madea child of 10 years old, will chat and keep you company, while her parents are busy or out etc.with the ease of a woman of 26. But then, how does this education go on?Not at all: it absolutely stops short.”
—Frances Burney (17521840)
“Competition is. In every business, no matter how small or how large, someone is just around the corner forever trying to steal your ideas and build his success out of your imagination, struggling after that which you have toiled endless years to secure, striving to outdo you in each and every way. If such a competitor would work as hard to originate as he does to copy, he would much more quickly gain success.”
—Alice Foote MacDougall (18671945)
