Richard A. Busemeyer - Marriage and Children

Marriage and Children

After his release from the Army Busemeyer found work with Sears and Roebuck Company selling vacuum cleaners in the store, and demonstrating them to interested customers in their own homes. It was hard work, he said, "... but it was damn good training." At a dance held at Xavier University, Busemeyer met and danced with Marjorie Voss, a girl from his neighborhood. The two were married on June 26, 1948. Their first child was a girl, Terri. Their second child, also a girl, was born on September 15, 1950.

Famous quotes containing the words marriage and, marriage and/or children:

Christianity as an organized religion has not always had a harmonious relationship with the family. Unlike Judaism, it kept almost no rituals that took place in private homes. The esteem that monasticism and priestly celibacy enjoyed implied a denigration of marriage and parenthood.
Beatrice Gottlieb, U.S. historian. The Family in the Western World from the Black Death to the Industrial Age, ch. 12, Oxford University Press (1993)

And what if my descendants lose the flower
Through natural declension of the soul,
Through too much business with the passing hour,
Through too much play, or marriage with a fool?
    William Butler Yeats (1865–1939)

One of the most significant effects of age-segregation in our society has been the isolation of children from the world of work. Whereas in the past children not only saw what their parents did for a living but even shared substantially in the task, many children nowadays have only a vague notion of the nature of the parent’s job, and have had little or no opportunity to observe the parent, or for that matter any other adult, when he is fully engaged in his work.
    Urie Bronfenbrenner (b. 1917)
