Rice (surname)

Rice is a surname that is usually of Welsh origin, but also can be Irish, English, or even German. In Wales it is an Anglicized transliteration of Rhys, as are Reese and Price. In Ireland, Rice may sometimes be an Anglicized transliteration of Ó Maolchraoibhe. Recent genetic evidence shows the surname also arose independently in southeastern England among men with non-Celtic ancestry. The German name Reiss has also been transliterated as Rice in the United States.

Famous quotes containing the word rice:

The arbitrary division of one’s life into weeks and days and hours seemed, on the whole, useless. There was but one day for the men, and that was pay day, and one for the women, and that was rent day. As for the children, every day was theirs, just as it should be in every corner of the world.
    —Alice Caldwell Rice (1870–1942)
