Indonesian Presidential Election 2014
At the end of 2012, Rhoma Irama, stated his intention to contest the 2014 presidential election. The Wasiat Ulama association and the Indonesia Malay Musicians Association (PAMMI) have endorsed him. His nomination has prompted satirical postings on Twitter.
Rhoma Irama recently appeared in the National Television Show called "Mata Najwa" in Indonesia's number one News Channel, Metro TV, he stated that he was ready to lead Indonesia based on the experience he achieved from his musical career and Islamic background. However, the host Najwa criticise and doubt that there is no correlation whatsoever between his musical and political career. Additionally, he proved himself as a racist individual by commenting that people coming from certain religion and ethnic in Indonesia should not sit in the legislative bureaucracy and government to rule and govern Indonesia . He refers his statement to the recently elected Vice Governor of Jakarta, Basuki Purnama (Chinese and Christian background). He claims that he and his muslim disciple see Chinese ethnic in Indonesia as a threat to the country.
Furthermore, he embarrassed himself in front millions of viewers across Indonesia by showing his incompetency in answering the most basic current Indonesian political situation and condition questions. One of the basic question that he had trouble answering was the issue surrounding the "BBM (Fuel and Petrol) Subsidy". He ridiculed himself by claiming that he is not Superman that knows everything. He also added that Oil, Fuel and Petrol are not his area of expertise. Not convinced with his incompetency, the host Najwa asked more and more basic political questions to indirectly prove that he is indeed incompetent to go for the 2014 Presidential Election. Tired of asking political question and convinced that he is incompetent, Najwa started to question his skills apart from singing and playing guitar, Rhoma proudly answered that he was a college drop out majoring in Social Politic, did not graduate and did not have any proper qualification to be a President.
