Religion

In 1813, a new Anglican parish church for Reculver, also dedicated to St Mary the Virgin, was opened at Hillborough, about 1.25 miles (2 km) south-west of Reculver, but within Reculver parish, as a replacement for the old church at Reculver. A "miserable little ... built in a rough and poverty-stricken style", it was replaced by the present structure, which was begun in 1876, and consecrated in 1878.

The church of 1876 was built by Gothic Revival architect Joseph Clarke, who was surveyor for the diocese of Canterbury at the time. It has seating for about 100 people, and is a "simple and relatively plain building", though it incorporates stonework from the old church at Reculver. A war memorial stands at the edge of the churchyard, facing into the adjacent Reculver Lane, and records the names of 27 parishioners who died fighting in the First World War and the Second World War.

Famous quotes containing the word religion:

You sir, will bring down that renowned chair in which you sit into infamy if your seal is set to this instrument of perfidy; and the name of this nation, hitherto the sweet omen of religion and liberty, will stink to the world.
    Ralph Waldo Emerson (1803–1882)

Religion is a great force: the only real motive force in the world; but what you fellows don’t understand is that you must get at a man through his own religion and not through yours.
    George Bernard Shaw (1856–1950)

When Religion and Royalty are swept away, the people will attack the great, and after the great, they will fall upon the rich.
    HonorĂ© De Balzac (1799–1850)
