Rail Transport in Poland - Broad Gauge Railways

Broad Gauge Railways

Poland uses the standard gauge for its railways, except for Broad Gauge Metallurgy Line and a few very short stretches near border crossings. Broad Gauge Metallurgy Line (known by its Polish acronym LHS) in Sławków is the longest broad gauge railway line in Poland. The line runs on a single track for almost 400 km from the Polish-Ukrainian border, crossing it just east of Hrubieszów. It is the westernmost broad gauge railway line in Europe that is connected to the broad gauge rail system of the countries of the former Soviet Union.

Famous quotes containing the words broad and/or railways:

the future is simply nothing at all. Nothing has happened to the present by becoming past except that fresh slices of existence have been added to the total history of the world. The past is thus as real as the present.
    —Charlie Dunbar Broad (1887–1971)

There is nothing in machinery, there is nothing in embankments and railways and iron bridges and engineering devices to oblige them to be ugly. Ugliness is the measure of imperfection.
    —H.G. (Herbert George)
