RAAF Station Mascot - History

History

No. 4 Elementary Flying Training School (4EFTS) operated from RAAF Station Mascot between 1940 and 1942. The EFTS gave a recruit 50 hours of basic aviation instruction on a simple trainer such as a Moth. Pilots who showed promise went on to advanced training at a Service Flying Training School. Others went on to different specialties, such as Wireless Schools, Air Observer Schools or Bombing and Gunnery Schools.

No. 2 Communication Unit and No. 3 Communication Unit were also located at the airfield during the conflict.

After 1946, the site was redeveloped to become Sydney Airport.

Famous quotes containing the word history:

No one can understand Paris and its history who does not understand that its fierceness is the balance and justification of its frivolity. It is called a city of pleasure; but it may also very specially be called a city of pain. The crown of roses is also a crown of thorns. Its people are too prone to hurt others, but quite ready also to hurt themselves. They are martyrs for religion, they are martyrs for irreligion; they are even martyrs for immorality.
    Gilbert Keith Chesterton (1874–1936)

Hence poetry is something more philosophic and of graver import than history, since its statements are rather of the nature of universals, whereas those of history are singulars.
    Aristotle (384–322 B.C.)

    I saw the Arab map.
It resembled a mare shuffling on,
    dragging its history like saddlebags,
nearing its tomb and the pitch of hell.
Adonis [Ali Ahmed Said] (b. 1930)
