Punch Line San Francisco

The Punch Line is San Francisco’s longest running comedy club. The original Punch Line Comedy Club opened on the site of the Old Waldorf, a rock venue managed by Bill Graham Presents, who had been promoting rock shows there since the mid-seventies. When Bill Graham opened Wolfgang’s in 1983 (at 915 Columbus Ave., the current home of Cobb’s Comedy Club), the majority of the space used by the Old Waldorf was split off and the remainder was renamed the Punch Line and dedicated to presenting live comedy. It was so successful that in August 1986 a second Punch Line was opened in Walnut Creek (but closed in 1995.) The third Punch Line opened on New Year’s Eve 1991 and is still presenting shows 7 days a week in Sacramento, California.

All three clubs were owned and operated by Bill Graham Presents up until the death of Bill Graham in 1991. The company was taken over by a group of employees who later sold it to SFX Promotions. It was then sold to Clear Channel Entertainment. Eventually, Bill Graham Presents along with other independent promoters formed Live Nation, which is now the largest concert production & promotion company in the world.

Comics such as Robin Williams, Ellen DeGeneres, Rosie O'Donnell, Drew Carey, Chris Rock and Dana Carvey took their first comedic steps on the Punch Line stage. The Punch Line's dedication to comic tradition has earned it the San Francisco Examiner and the San Francisco Chronicle's readers' choice award for the best comedy club. Today, the Punch Line is the only full-time comedy club in San Francisco, hosting comics Dave Chappelle, Margaret Cho, Bobby Slayton, Wanda Sykes, Greg Giraldo, Jim Gaffigan, Sarah Silverman, Zach Galifianakis, Dave Attell, George Lopez, David Cross, and Greg Proops, among others.

Famous quotes containing the words san francisco, punch line, punch, line, san and/or francisco:

    San Francisco is where gay fantasies come true, and the problem the city presents is whether, after all, we wanted these particular dreams to be fulfilled—or would we have preferred others? Did we know what price these dreams would exact? Did we anticipate the ways in which, vivid and continuous, they would unsuit us for the business of daily life? Or should our notion of daily life itself be transformed?
    Edmund White (b. 1940)

    I never had anybody but you ... not a real husband ... not even a man.... It’s a bad joke without a punch line.
    Stanley Kubrick (b. 1928)

    At least the Pilgrim Fathers used to shoot Indians: the Pilgrim Children merely punch time clocks.
    —E.E. (Edward Estlin)

    I said: “A line will take us hours maybe;
    Yet if it does not seem a moment’s thought,
    Our stitching and unstitching has been naught.
    William Butler Yeats (1865–1939)

    There they are at last, Miss Rutledge. The will-o-the-wisps with plagues of fortune. San Francisco, the latest newborn of a great republic.
    Ben Hecht (1893–1964)

    Today, San Francisco has experienced a double tragedy of incredible proportions. As acting mayor, I order an immediate state of mourning in our city. The city and county of San Francisco must and will pull itself together at this time. We will carry on as best as we possibly can.... I think we all have to share the same sense of shame and the same sense of outrage.
    Dianne Feinstein (b. 1933)
