Transportation in this hilly city is mainly dependent on private buses as well as the state run KSRTC buses. It is well connected to the capital city of Kerala Thiruvananthapuram by KSRTC Fast Passenger buses which ply every 15 minutes. Buses are also plenty to the district headquarters of Kollam and Pathanamthitta and to towns in Tamilnadu like Tenkasi, Tirunelveli, Madurai and Shenkottai.

The Main Eastern Highway, which is Punalur-Pathanamthitta-Muvattupuzha Road / SH - 08 and Punalur-Ayoor- Road / SH - 48 connects Punalur to Thiruvanthapuram). Connections to other major towns include Punalur-Kulathupuzha, Punalur-Narikkal road, Punalur-Kayamkulam Road / SH - 5, and Kollam - Thirumangalam Road|(NH-744). The Hill_Highway(SH-59) is the longest state highway in Kerala also passing through Punalur. The proposed highway extends from Nandarapadvu in Kasaragod district to Parassala in Thiruvananthapuram district, will have a length of 1332.16 km. The nearest airport is at Thiruvananthapuram.
