Psycho is an American horror/thriller entertainment media franchise consisting of Psycho, a 1959 novel by Robert Bloch, as well as derivative works in film, television, and books. In total, the franchise consists of 5 films, a television series prequel, four novels, two retrospective documentaries and a remake of the first film being the unofficial entry. The first and original film, Psycho, was directed by filmmaker Alfred Hitchcock in 1960, with three sequels, a spin-off, and a remake following. The films consist of Psycho, Psycho II, Psycho III and Psycho IV: The Beginning. Two related but non-canon films are a failed TV pilot Bates Motel and a remake of the first film. A film titled Hitchcock, based on the 1990 book Alfred Hitchcock and the Making of Psycho by Stephen Rebello, was released on November 23, 2012. A TV series Bates Motel premiered on A&E on March 18, 2013, being a prequel to the original film set in modern day starring Freddie Highmore as a teenage Norman Bates and Vera Farmiga as his mother Norma Bates. The series is the fourth highest-grossing American horror franchise in the genre.

The films are based around the twisted personality and murders of Norman Bates, a disturbed young man who operates the Bates Motel who is haunted by the spirit of his deceased mother.
