Professional Hockey Players' Association

The Professional Hockey Players' Association, or PHPA, is the labor union that represents the interests of hockey players in the American Hockey League, ECHL, and Central Hockey League. Established in 1967, the PHPA is considered one of the oldest players' unions in professional sports. Hockey is the only professional sport with a minor league players’ union. Recognized by the US National Labor Relations Board as the certified bargaining unit for all members enrolled in the Association, the main function of the PHPA is to negotiate and protect various player benefits by way of a Collective Bargaining Agreement. These benefits include: health and welfare benefits, training camp allowances, travel and trade relocation expenses, daily per diem, housing allowances, play-off shares, licensing rights, revenue-sharing, and Membership Assistance Programs.

Famous quotes containing the words professional and/or association:

If I’d written all the truth I knew for the past ten years, about 600 people—including me—would be rotting in prison cells from Rio to Seattle today. Absolute truth is a very rare and dangerous commodity in the context of professional journalism.
    Hunter S. Thompson (b. 1939)

It is not merely the likeness which is precious ... but the association and the sense of nearness involved in the thing ... the fact of the very shadow of the person lying there fixed forever! It is the very sanctification of portraits I think—and it is not at all monstrous in me to say ... that I would rather have such a memorial of one I dearly loved, than the noblest Artist’s work ever produced.
    Elizabeth Barrett Browning (1806–1861)
