Place Longueuil

Place Longueuil is a shopping mall located in Longueuil, Quebec. It is the largest shopping mall in the city of Longueuil and is located near the Longueuil Metro station. The parking lot contains 1,780 spaces. The major tenants are IGA Extra and opening soon in Fall 2013 Target.

Place Longueuil was built in 1966 with 65 stores anchored by Steinberg, and Miracle Mart It was at the time the sole shopping mall in the city of Longueuil. In 1979, the whole mall (except for Steinberg, Miracle Mart and a Odeon cinema) was destroyed by a fire started by a group of teenagers that originated from a garbage can. It was rebuilt and reopenned in 1981 with 85 stores, thus dethroning Place Desormeaux as the city's largest mall.

There has been little change in the anchor spaces of Place Longueuil. Miracle Mart was renamed M in 1986 and finally closed in 1992. After M closed, Zellers took the location of M. Also in 1992, Steinberg was changed to an IGA and rebranded to the current IGA Extra the following year.

On February 18, 2011, it was announced that Homburg Canada will succeed over Cogir as manager of Place Longueuil. The transaction took effects a couple of days later.

Famous quotes containing the word place:

To have a place full of delights and nothing but delights, which one does not have to explain and defend to people who have ideas unsympathetic to one, it is to economize the forces which keep one from ending like the wisteria, from committing the unpardonable sin of doing things with difficulty.
    Rebecca West (1892–1983)
