History

All pit bulls were created with similar cross-breeding between bulldogs and terriers, but each individual pit bull breed has a distinct history.

In 1986–87 there were about 1–2 million pit bulls in the U.S., approximately 2% of the dogs in the country, and in 2004 there were at least 2 million pit bulls in the U.S. In 2009, an estimated 79 million dogs of all breeds, including pit bulls, were owned in the U.S.
