Pines are divided into three subgenera, based on cone, seed and leaf characters:
- Pinus subg. Pinus, the yellow or hard pine group
- Pinus subg. Ducampopinus, the foxtail or pinyon group
- Pinus subg. Strobus, the white or soft pine groups
