Peterlee - Media

Media

The town itself is perhaps not as well known as the surrounding cities such as; Sunderland, Durham and Hartlepool, but it has however had number of brief media coverage in its short history. Peterlee was featured in two Channel 4 programmes; Secret millionaire and neighbouring Easington Colliery in the '10 worst places to live in the U.K.', finishing in 10th place.

The town was also embarrassed in December 2008 by the 'Christmas tree saga', in which the towns local tree was branded as the 'worst in the country'. The BBC covered this storey in a light hearted section of its morning news round up. The people of Peterlee were outraged that the council had the 'audacity' to still erect the tree after having seen it before hand. It was widely speculated that Albania were to donate one in aid. Councillor Joan Maslin described the tree as 'an insult to the people of Peterlee', after receiving many complaints describing it as 'a twig', and 'something that people would throw in a skip after Christmas'.

Famous quotes containing the word media:

The media no longer ask those who know something ... to share that knowledge with the public. Instead they ask those who know nothing to represent the ignorance of the public and, in so doing, to legitimate it.
    Serge Daney (1944–1992)

The corporate grip on opinion in the United States is one of the wonders of the Western World. No First World country has ever managed to eliminate so entirely from its media all objectivity—much less dissent.
    Gore Vidal (b. 1925)

The media transforms the great silence of things into its opposite. Formerly constituting a secret, the real now talks constantly. News reports, information, statistics, and surveys are everywhere.
    Michel de Certeau (1925–1986)
