Peter Jepson-Young - The Dr. Peter Diaries

The Dr. Peter Diaries

By 1989 Jepson-Young was unable to continue his medical practice due to his failing health. Turning his attention to AIDS education, in 1990 Jepson-Young began the “Dr. Peter Diaries” with five episodes airing on the CBC Early Evening News . Through these short segments, in which he was only referred to as “Dr. Peter”, he shared his experiences with the general public. Most viewers were not aware of his surname until after his death. The Diaries did much to educate the general public about AIDS and HIV and put a human face on the disease. Dr. Peter continued the series through 111 episodes,spanning two years from September 1990 up to his death in November 1992. In 1993, The Broadcast Tapes of Dr. Peter were nominated for and Academy Award for Best Documentary Feature.

Famous quotes containing the words peter and/or diaries:

    To refer is not to assert, though you refer in order to go on to assert.
    —Sir Peter Frederick Strawson (b. 1919)

    Tomorrow in the offices the year on the stamps will be altered;
    Tomorrow new diaries consulted, new calendars stand;
    With such small adjustments life will again move forward
    Implicating us all; and the voice of the living be heard:
    “It is to us that you should turn your straying attention;
    Us who need you, and are affected by your fortune;
    Us you should love and to whom you should give your word.”
    Philip Larkin (1922–1986)
