It has a population of about 2,000, one village shop, a chapel and All Saints parish church (Church in Wales). It also has a popular village pub, the Pheasant, wwhich was once an old farmhouse. It is very popular due to its easy to find location, ith plenty of outdoor seating, a field adjacent and that it welcomes dogs to the outdoor area. It is now owned by Brains Brewery http://www.sabrain.com Pen-y-fai was once a village for employees of the Llewellyn estate. There is also a school in the village that takes children from age 4 through to age 11. The school itself is in a poor state of repair and is currently being re-built (April 2013)

There are several playing fields in the village, the most recent of which was created as a part of a section 106 agreement between the council and the developers of the Cavendish Park housing estate. As a result of subsequent development, this field has become "landlocked" between housing estates, with no vehicle access or parking, or indeed any facilities to allow the field to be used by local sports teams. It is a great feature for the village and a safe play area for children as it has a park as well as a play area for people and their dogs.

One other notable feature of the village, is its football (soccer) club Pen-y-fai FC. The club takes children from 6 to 16 years of age and plays as a member of Bridgend & District Football League. With teams in the mini-football and junior sections. The club has over 200 children within its ranks making it one of the largest mini/junior clubs in the district.

Pen-y-fai is also the only place in Wales that has the Dog's Trust dog rehoming kennel and regularly holds fundraising events as well as welcoming donations of bedding suitable for dogs, toys, food and treats.

The Court Colman Manor, built in 1776 it was renovated, extended and was the former home of the above mentioned Llewellyn family.
