Partial Discharge - Discharge Detection and Measuring Systems

Discharge Detection and Measuring Systems

With the partial discharge measurement, the dielectric condition of high voltage equipment can be evaluated, and electrical treeing in the insulation can be detected and located. Tan delta measurement allows detection of water trees, a characteristic branching tree-shaped form of damage due to water infiltration into solid dielectric. Partial discharge measurement can localize the damaged part of an insulated system.

Data collected during partial discharge testing is compared to measurement values of the same cable gathered during the acceptance-test. This allows simple and quick classification of the dielectric condition (new, strongly aged, faulty) of the device under test and appropriate maintenance and repair measures may be planned and organized in advance.

Partial discharge measurement is applicable to cables and accessories with various insulation materials, such as polyethylene or lead-covered paper-insulated cable. Partial discharge measurement is routinely carried out to assess the condition of the insulation system of rotating machines (motors and generators), transformers, and gas-insulated switchgear.

Famous quotes containing the words discharge, measuring and/or systems:

It is wonderful when a calculation is made, how little the mind is actually employed in the discharge of any profession.
    Samuel Johnson (1709–1784)

By measuring individual human worth, the novelist reveals the full enormity of the State’s crime when it sets out to crush that individuality.
    Ian McEwan (b. 1938)

We have done scant justice to the reasonableness of cannibalism. There are in fact so many and such excellent motives possible to it that mankind has never been able to fit all of them into one universal scheme, and has accordingly contrived various diverse and contradictory systems the better to display its virtues.
    Ruth Benedict (1887–1948)
