Parthenogenesis - in Popular Culture

In Popular Culture

Parthenogenesis was mentioned in the 2008 Doctor Who episode "Partners in Crime" as the method used to separate "Adipose" (fat) from the human host, creating young Adipose (hand-sized, marshmallow-shaped beings, composed almost entirely of fat with two eyes and a mouth, two arms with webbed hands and two stumpy legs).

In the Mass Effect video game series, the Asari, an all-female race, is described as reproducing in a process very similar to parthenogenesis.

In episode 5.11 of the drama show House MD, House leads a woman to believe her pregnancy is the result of human parthenogenesis; it is later revealed that House lied to the couple and that the pregnancy resulted from the woman's infidelity.

Famous quotes containing the words popular culture, popular and/or culture:

The lowest form of popular culture—lack of information, misinformation, disinformation, and a contempt for the truth or the reality of most people’s lives—has overrun real journalism. Today, ordinary Americans are being stuffed with garbage.
    Carl Bernstein (b. 1944)

It is said the city was spared a golden-oak period because its residents, lacking money to buy the popular atrocities of the nineties, necessarily clung to their rosewood and mahogany.
—Administration in the State of Sout, U.S. public relief program (1935-1943)

What culture lacks is the taste for anonymous, innumerable germination. Culture is smitten with counting and measuring; it feels out of place and uncomfortable with the innumerable; its efforts tend, on the contrary, to limit the numbers in all domains; it tries to count on its fingers.
    Jean Dubuffet (1901–1985)
